Obituary for Robert "Bob" Dittmar

Robert “Bob” Lloyd Dittmar, Jr., passed away peacefully on March 5, 2021 at the age of 60 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, where he had been a resident for many years. Bob was born on May 12, 1960, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of his late parents Robert L. Dittmar, Sr., and Margaret (Sawyer) Dittmar. He is survived by his son, Rob Dittmar of Cincinnati, his sister Mary Lynne Dittmar, residing in North Carolina, and good friends in Clearfield and across the country.

An Army veteran, Bob was proud of his military service which saw him stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and overseas in Wiesbaden, Germany. After his return to the United States he acquired a Commercial Driver’s License and worked as an over-the-road professional driver while helping to support his family. He later worked in the IT field, trouble-shooting computer software and hardware.

A film buff, Bob built a collection of several hundred films and enjoyed sharing them with friends. He had wide-ranging interests, including deep knowledge of the history of the Civil War, which he explored and discussed during trips to Gettysburg; the U.S. space program, culminating in an invitation from NASA to view a Space Shuttle launch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center; throwing darts, and playing cards. An avid reader, he enjoyed science fiction, fantasy, and military histories. He loved music all of his life, particularly “classic vinyl” of the 1960’s and 70’s.

A private commemoration of his life will be held near Cincinnati, Ohio, at a later time.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Bob’s name be made to support the historical and educational mission of the Gettysburg Foundation at https://www.gettysburgfoundation.org
