Julia Frances Hix, 93, passed peacefully on September 6th, at Foxdale Village where she had lived for 23 years. Born January 3, 1933, in Thomasville, NC to James Sears Hix and Mary Francis (Pearce), she graduated from Woman’s College, University of North Carolina - Greensboro in 1955.
She served as Field Advisor and Camp Director with the Girls Scouts of America - Philadelphia, 1955-1960. From 1960-1965, she served as Recreational Superintendent and Service Clubs Director for the Department of Special Services, US Army in Germany and the US. She directed the Student Center at Douglass College in NJ and served as VP of program at Camp Catawissa in Bloomsburg, PA.
She worked as Coordinator of Volunteer Services at Retreat State Hospital and afterwards at Laurelton State Hospital, ending her State employment as an auditor of Retirement and Nursing facilities, Department of Health, throughout the western region of Pennsylvania.
Julia loved hiking, swimming, animals, travel and naturalized gardening. Her patio attracted friends, butterflies and laughter. A professional organizer and recreation specialist, she lived what she believed.
Julia was active within her many communities, especially surrounding governance, elder care and environmental concerns. She was active within the National Continuing Care Residents Association, serving a term as VP of Legislation, and served on the Board of Foxdale Village as well as on various committees. She is best remembered for her leadership on its Green Committee, which piloted the composting and recycling programs for Foxdale and became a model for other organizations in the region. She recently received a life-time achievement award from the Centre County Green Community Partnership for her environmental activism.
She is predeceased by her parents and brother, Jim Hix, Jr., and is survived by a cousin, Stan Dalton of Reading, PA.

A celebration of her life will be held at Foxdale Village in State College, October, 18th at 2:00 PM, where friends and colleagues will share celebrated memories.
