Obituary

With heavy hearts and profound reverence, we mark the passing of Verlee Ann Sheehan (Petitt), who departed this world on July 5, 2026, at her cherished home, surrounded by devoted family and steadfast friends. Born in Rockford, Illinois on August 19, 1959, Verlee’s life was a radiant portrait of compassion, resilience, and unwavering warmth.

Verlee’s journey was shaped early by challenges to her health, which led to her being ejected from high school. Yet, undeterred by adversity, she achieved her GED, earning an outstanding score—a testament to her determination and intellectual vigor. This spirit of perseverance would define her for the rest of her years.

Her professional life unfolded across many different avenues, dictated by her health but always approached with dedication and care. Among her varied occupations, Verlee found particular fulfillment at Burger King, Magnet Applications, and Lowes. In these workplaces, she not only honed her skills but wove deep and enduring friendships, testifying to her innate ability to connect and inspire those alongside her.

Those who knew Verlee will remember a woman of diverse passions and gentle artistry. Her hands, so often busy crocheting blankets for the children in her life, reflected boundless love. Music brought her solace and joy; her 12-string guitar, a trusted companion, often filled her home with rich, comforting melodies. Nature, too, beckoned to her—visits to Kinzua Bridge left her awe-inspired and grateful for the world’s quiet beauty.

Perhaps most remarkable was Verlee's gift as a nurturer—not just to her family, but to animals of every kind. She lavished care upon any creature entrusted to her, ensuring each one experienced tenderness and sanctuary. Verlee’s nurturing heart extended to her human circle as well; though unable to have children of her own, she embraced the sacred roles of mother and grandmother to many, delighting in the laughter of three cherished granddaughters and the joy brought to her by her treasured grandson.

Her playful sense of humor was a balm to all who knew her, lightening spirits and weaving levity even into life’s difficult moments. Her ever-giving nature and fierce desire to care for others stood as the cornerstones of her personality. No matter one’s age or circumstance, Verlee was the soul who would ensure you were cared for, comforted, and included.

Love and loyalty defined her relationships. She is survived by her beloved husband, Peter Sheehan, whose loyal companionship brought much light and love to her days. She leaves an enduring legacy in her sisters Linda Pelton, Rita Timothy, Pammy Omps, Sandra Cates, Deeda Cates, and LaConda Anderson; her niece Amanda Griego; and her step-daughters Rachael Sherwood and Renea Sherwood. Each carries treasured memories, shaped by Verlee’s unconditional love.

She joins in eternal rest her brothers Earl Petitt, Dale Petitt, and Gary Petitt, as well as her sisters Debbie Ingram and Edna Pilcher, whose memories she carried tenderly throughout her life.

Among her proudest accomplishments, Verlee counted her recovery from a double lung transplant, received in 2019—a triumph that spoke to her indomitable will and zest for life. At age 62, she achieved the milestone of homeownership, weaving an additional thread of independence and strength through the tapestry of her life. Yet, above all professional or personal achievements, she valued her role as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, placing her family at the very core of her happiness.

In her leisure, Verlee found delight watching women’s rugby with Peter—even during her final days, evidence of the simple joys they shared together. Her life was, above all, a mosaic of love, laughter, and selfless care.

Family and friends are invited to honor Verlee’s life at funeral services on Saturday, July 18th, beginning at 6 pm at Light House Church of DuBois, 1147 Behringer Hwy, DuBois, PA 15801. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be dedicated in her name to Lung Transplant Foundation at https://lungtransplantfoundation.org

Verlee Ann Sheehan’s story is one of courage, kindness, and unyielding generosity. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy endures—woven into every life she touched, every animal she saved, and every heart she warmed with her gentle smile.
