January 1, 2000, it was signed into law that the United States Armed Forces must provide all eligible veterans with military funeral honors if requested by their family. The law states that at least two members of an honor guard will be present to perform a flag folding ceremony and the playing of Taps.
Depending on your loved one’s rank, length of service, and if they passed away during active duty, they may or may not be eligible for certain benefits. In most cases, your veteran is likely to receive the following veteran benefits.
• A burial flag is provided at no cost to have draped over the casket.
• Headstone markers or medallions provided by the Department of Veteran Affairs at no cost.
• Burial in a National or State Veterans Cemetery
• Families may apply to receive a Presidential Memorial Certificate signed by the President.
